[By viewpoint, I mean different people looking at the same object seeing different things.] In the context of computing with intervals, I think of intervals as a datatype. As such, it has sets of values and operators defined for it. Multiple such systems can be defined, differing in specific sets and/or operators. Some systems may have desirable properties for specific problems, such as being closed. It is a question of interpretation whether an interval represents a set of bounds or not. One can compute with intervals regardless. Whether what one computes means anything is a question of interpretation. I think one can see a parallel with propositional calculus, where you can create a system without ever having to talk about meaning, although us humans tend to do so. One approach to attaching "meaning" involves mapping between language fragments and sets of mathematical objects, or "denotations". I think it was Dana Scott who established a rigorous mathematical framework for the specification of denotations. We might also talk about "computing with sets", of which "computing with intervals" is a subset. As it happens certain kinds of computations can be done more efficiently when using intervals, but it doesn't rule out the possibility of using other classes of set. Probably due to familiarity and availability of implementations of specific languages we tend to think in terms of the available native datatypes. Maybe in the future we will start to treat higher-order functions as a native datatype. On the question of ease of implementation, I am fortunate in that I use an F95 compiler that implements INTERVAL as a native datatype. However for implementors the situation is getting better with the development of standard libraries and language bindings for IEEE functionality e.g. in C9X. An interesting extension in the UltraSPARC-III processor is the SIAM instruction (Set Interval Arithmetic Mode), which enables the floating point rounding mode to be changed as part of the pipeline rather than as a write to a floating point status register. The latter usually stalls a processor. Its still nowhere near as good as having true hardware interval instructions though. Luc, I agree that constraint propagation deserves to be better known in the interval community. Kearfott's book has some remarks on it, but without details. But there is the COCONUT state of the art online book http://www.mat.univie.ac.at/~neum/glopt/coconut/StArt.html which contains a very readable introduction to constraint propagation, and which I referred to in the review, just when finishing off Part II. Moreover, I forgot to mention the book Numerica by van Hentenryck et al., which I think gives also a better introduction to constraint propagation than your book. I "discovered" (meaning re-invented the wheel) constraint propagation and called it "substitution-iteration." My first work on the subject was "Decomposition of arithmetic expressions to improve the behavior of intervl iteration for nonlinear systems," "Computing" 47(2), pp. 169-191, 1991. At the time, I was unaware of the constraint propagation literature, and I hadn't yet identified that the Narinyani / Sem{\"e}nov "subdefinite calculations" were the same idea, with intervals. Of course, there are variations in the details among these approaches. Also, the constraint propagation community has developed an elaborate theory surrounding the basic technique. Such constraints may be simple or complex, linear or non-linear and may, or may not, involve transcendental functions. They are widely used to express chemical or mechanical models, process descriptions, building codes or cost restrictions for example. Many industrial problems involving continuous constraints can be modelled as continuous constraint satisfaction and optimization problems (CSOPs). In practice, such models are often large in size and non-linear. This workshop focuses on complete solving techniques for continuous CSOPs that provide all solutions with full rigor. Less rigorous solution techniques are not excluded, since they may be part of complete relevant techniques. Complete solution techniques guarantee that all the constraints - e.g. security or tolerance criteria - are satisfied and the global optima identified. Completeness would thus benefit directly the quality and reliability of decisions or analyses based on the provided solutions. This has obvious implications in many industrial and economic areas. None of the existing approaches for solving non-linear CSOPs is fully satisfactory in practice. Non-linear programming techniques are routinely used and can solve large-scale non-linear problems. However, they are complete only in the convex case and if roundoff errors are controlled. In contrast, constraint programming solvers preserve completeness, but suffer from poor scalability. The respective strengths of mathematical and constraint programming appear however to be highly complementary and a number of recent development showed that there is a lot to be gained by merging the different inference techniques they provide and by combining their specific advantages. The goal of this workshop is to bring together communities from global optimization, mathematical programming and constraint programming, giving the opportunity to promote presentation and discussion of ongoing work on solving techniques for continuous CSOPs. The workshop aims to encourage cross-fertilization between the various approaches, including the study of adapted cooperation strategies between mathematical and constraint programming, and of new representations and abstractions for which they can efficiently interact. ************************************************************* The Asian Symposium on Computer Mathematics (ASCM) is a series of conferences which offers an opportunity for participants to present original research, to learn of research progress and new developments, and to exchange ideas and views on doing mathematics using computers. ASCM 2003 will provide an international forum for active researchers to review the current state of the art and trends on computer mathematics. The symposium will consist of plenary sessions by invited speakers, regular sessions of contributed papers, and software demonstrations.
