Mathematics 556 Course Description

First Semester Graduate Numerical Analysis, Spring, 2004

This is the second semester of the two semester graduate-level course in numerical analysis. The main goal of this course is to provide a sound theoretical and practical overview of numerical analysis and scientific computing. The course content come substantially from the text; this means that traditional topics will be covered.  Connections with both applications and other areas of mathematics will be given.

In the first semester, Prof. Christov covered the first four chapters of An Introduction to Numerical Analysis (Second Edition) by Kendall Atkinson, and he covered numerical integration (chapter 5) to date.  We will definitely cover ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, and numerical solution of systems of linear equations, and will cover the matrix eigenvalue problem, time permitting.
