Mathematics 556 Course Description

First Semester Graduate Numerical Analysis, Spring, 2001

This is the second semester of the two semester graduate-level course in numerical analysis. The main goal of this course is to provide a sound theoretical and practical overview of numerical analysis and scientific computing. The course content will be adjusted to the audience's interests and needs, but certain basic topics will be covered in any case.  Connections with both applications and other areas of mathematics will be given.

In the first semester, we concentrated on machine arithmetic, roundoff, and interval arithmetic, linear systems, interpolation and approximation, and numerical integration.  In this second semester, we will concentrate on nonlinear systems of equations, optimization, ordinary and partial differential equations.
